Re: Why Olympus is an ACE in all sizes !
i agree that the sweet-spot for m43 are their ~1.7/1.8 aperture lenses from the 12 f2, the 15 1.7, the 20 1.7, the 25 1.8 and 45 1.8..we have seen little to no movement from Olympus or Panasonic to capitalize on making additional small lenses.
While Olympus has spent their RD resources and money on PRO primes, Fuji has wisely released their most popular lenses, the 16 2.8, 23, 35, and 50mm f2, to compliment their existing 2 pancake lenses, the 18mm and 27mm…these are slightly bigger than the small m43 primes but still small, and all metal and with aperture rings. These fit nicely on the XE4 which is smaller than the em10 series
i have also used an A7Rii with a clutch of Samyang lenses which are broadly similar in size to the m43 lenses above, are significantly cheaper, and are actually optically just as good. Check out the 24mm 2.8, the 35mm 2.8, the 45mm 1.8, the 75mm 1.8, and you can also use the 75mm in Apsc crop mode for a nice ~110mm portrait kength with still ~20MP.
I just think we Oly users are deluding ourselves if we think that Oly still has a distinct size advantage for anything other than telephoto…that used to be the case 5+ years ago, and why i liked the system so much then, but we m43 users probably have to accept the fact that everyone has been working on making smaller mirrorless as well and that will continue (just look at A7C, Sigma FP, Canon RP…).
What is the true ‘calling card’ for m43 other than wildlife anymore? I am a user but cant really articulate where the format is going, they need to find a niche where its not about comparing specs vs FF mirrorless…m43 will always lose that comparison. Fuji, despite being a smaller than FF sensor was able to find a niche based on user-experience and excellent optics, such that folks didnt care that they could get more IQ with FF, they preferred using the Fuji system…and they also invested in the Medium Format to leapfrog FF for those that really do care about ultimate IQ.
