I have read, actually, that an American investor, with a lot of stock in Olympus, more or less convinced (or forced?) Olympus to spin off it's camera division due to lacking profits.  If this is true, then likely, Olympus would not have spun off its camera division - as the Japanese business culture is much different than Western business cultures.  The Japanese, with their conglomerates and so forth, tend to support each other, or support the company in the conglomerate that is not doing so well....
