With zooms, it gets complicated. When you add extension tubes to the zoom, the magnification becomes almost independent of the zoom setting - but the focusing distance changes with the zoom setting. I find that I tend to set the lens to the minimum focus distance and then use the zoom ring to focus the lens. (If there's enough light for autofocus, I may leave that on - but the focusing distance range between minimum and "infinity" is very narrow, so this is more to fine tune focusing done by zooming.)
