As far as the seed goes...it depends upon what species of birds you are hoping to attract. For cardinals, grosbeaks and titmice, etc. black oil sunflower seed and safflower seeds work best. For sparrows and finches use millet or a mixture of seed. I have found using safflower discourages blackbirds and starlings. Squirrels will even leave safflower alone if there is another feeder close by with sunflower seeds. Plus, don't forget to put out suet or no melt suet for woodpeckers, thrashers and warblers.
