Nikon Z fc Lens Selection

I have a Fujifilm X100T, which I like a great deal. I'd like to add a similar camera, but with an interchangeable lens this time.

I'm interested in the recently announced Nikon Z fc, because of the physical control dials on the top plate. I have been looking at Fujifilm models, for this same reason. Fuiji has a wide array of lenses available for their X-mount, and it seems they'd all fit on, say, a Fujifilm X-E4 (for comparison).

Which brings me to the Nikon. I see Nikon has a substantial number of Z-mount lenses. However, the Z fc is "DX" format; most of the lenses available are "FX" format. To what does this "format" refer? Will the Z fc only utilize the "DX" format lenses, or will it allow you to mount and use an "FX" lens, albeit with maybe a constricted area?

Thanks in advance for helping me understand what Nikon's "formats" mean.
