I would like to thank everybody who looked at my thread and offered advice. I had indeed played about with the camera settings without really knowing what I was doing, and then promptly forgotten what I had done. I live very close to the sea and quite often we get a haze coming off the sea usually depending upon the time of day and the temperature. I have altered the settings as best as I could, but because of the current hot weather and the crowds of people visiting the resort today I haven't been able to test the new settings. Thanks once again.
You have to consider the shooting conditions, not merely accommodating or working around, but taking advantage. Take haze for instance. Not so great for open mid-day long distance shots. But it diffuses the light for better portraits, and adds character and color to sunsets. You can also use it to add depth; things that are further away will have more haze.
