Sorry, but I beg to differ on that one.  Ansel Adams went to great lengths to extract the maximum performance out of the tools that were available to him at the time, especially in developing and printing.  He wrote several highly technical books on photography.  His autobiography is also a good read.  He was a skilled artist, but also very technically proficient.

A person that carried around very heavy large format cameras for photography was very much a gearhead.  Most folks would compromise.  Ansel did not.
