Hard to judge when we don't know how you shot it. Was it hand-held? Resolution seems awfully how for a 45 megapixel photo. JPEG artifacts pretty harsh. Overall, I don't think the subject matter is very informative without knowing more.

Fair enough. It is a compressed, unsharpened Jpeg (30Mpix). Overall quality is low, but still shows significant sharpness variation from center to edge, particularly LHS.

As I process more I find more examples. My lens (and this is the second copy like it) is a poor performer at 35mm, no question. I guess I am curious if I have simply been (a little) unlucky, or this lens has significant copy variation (which I thought Canon had sorted out).

Here is another example: 42mm on the left, 35mm on the right. Tripod, IS off, same focus (about 8-10m) and shooting location. The only difference is I tilted the 35mm shot up a bit.

What I am learning is anything less than infinity focus at 35mm causes significant sharpness problems, mostly on the LHS. Infinity focus is just acceptable.

Full image for context (compressed jpeg). Focused on the righthand tree for the hanging moss. I always BBF and recompose to avoid any field curvature effects.
