About the 737 max.  One usage of the word over engineered is sometimes over complicated to the point mistakes get made because people can’t understand how something operates.    One of the tragedies of one of the fatal flights was that on the previous flight an off duty pilot was riding in the cockpit and when the anti stall system malfunctioned he knew to tell the crew to just turn it off. Next crew didn’t know to do that.  In fact they exactly followed the Boeing training and that procedure lead to that crash.

Boeing training on iPads instead of flight simulators to save money also is a huge contributor.
