The ambient light issue - it is all our fault
We all know this but it is worth re-telling.
With the lcd washout in bright sunlight (tell us about it in Australia) it is not the lcd to blame but our eyes ….
Our eyes control our pupil dilation quite quickly and smoothly in all ambient light except for very sudden changes.
Therefore when our pupils contract to make our vision work in bright light there is not enough light coming off the lcd to compensate. Nor will any level of increased light output from the lcd be enough to cancel out the increased sunlight of a very bright day and our automatic eye-reflex pupil contraction. Lcd argues with the power of “old sol”?
Hard to see lcd screens are often blamed on glare reflections and this is obviously a part of it and only can be completely eliminated by shutting out all external light with some sort of hood.
But this is the magic of the open loupe type device (any loupe not having a hood involved). They work like magic because the eye through the lens of the loupe only sees the lcd screen and adjusts to its output of light thereby dilating the pupil somewhat and the lcd becomes quite clear. This type of loupe does not eliminate true reflected glare though. But does show that glare is only a minor nuisance and not such a big deal as some times thought. Easily fixed if truly thought necessary by a hand or large brim of a hat shielding the side-directional light source causing the reflected light.
The open loupe is a far less bulky device to carry about than an enclosed loupe. Of course you can sometimes angle a tilt screen to reduce the glare effect and perhaps the same angle is away from the brightest sunlight and you get a bonus of a less contracted set of pupils. Even stand in some shady area, with same purpose and effect.
