I believe I'm following the instructions closely. However I'm not getting any focus changes between the stack pictures.

After setting the fore and aft distances and pressing OK, the sequence begins but the focus does not change. Should I have set the autofocus before shooting a sequence?

Assuming you’re talking about a GFX, try this:

Focus Bracket Guide
1. Assign “Focus Bracket Setting” to MY MENU (“Once and done!”)
2. Focus to Manual Focus w/ Focus Peaking enabled
3. Shutter to ES if feasible (If not select EFCS)
4. Self-timer to 2 seconds, or use remote release
Steps: (Auto Mode)
❖ Shoot a frame of your open hand facing camera.
❖ Multi switch to MULTI
❖ Drive Mode to Focus Bracket
❖ Go to MY MENU > Focus Bracket Setting
✓ Choose 0’s and hit “OK” button
✓ Maneuver focus point to A point (near point)
& lock with AF ON button.
✓ Hit the OK button to register A point
✓ Maneuver focus point to B point (far point) &
lock with AF ON button
✓ Press the “Display / Back” button (menu will
return to “Auto” highlighted)
✓ Press the shutter button to launch focus
bracket sequence
❖ Move Multi selector back to “Still”
❖ Shoot a frame of the back of your hand facing camera.
