AFAIK it will prioritise for greater DOF by using smallish apertures . This can be be achieved in AP mode by selecting the aperture yourself. The problem with the so called macro mode is that you have no control over any of the decisions it makes and cannot override them.It will also use all focusing points and try to focus on the nearest thing to it which may or may not be where you wish to focus so you will need to use then manual focus for precise focusing.

so its just av?

Not really and it's also not macro in it's true sense,it's a close up mode that will set an appropriate aperture and shutter speed according to the detected lighting and lens focal length etc. It's a point and shoot mode that assumes the camera is being used hand held by the inexperienced . It will also choose where to focus which may not be where the user intends.
