OK that makes sense but then why would they make the converters with protruding front elements??? Why not match the RF design with flush elements on their converters? I'm sure there is physics involved that prevents it ? IDK...

I assume, but don't know for sure, that a design of a converter without a forward protruding element would be possible, but probably inferior optically. They would probably have to make it something that would invalidate the advantages of the rear element of the lens being close to the sensor, as it is with 100-500 lens alone. Otherwise, their design choices for the converters make no sense, and that is usually not something Canon's lens designers do.

I, for one, however, would be glad to give up just a tiny bit of optical quality for a "flat" 1.4X or 1.6X converter that would work with my RF 70-200.
