In a recent thread I posted a photo from my Nikon as a comparison image from my Sigma SD1 Merrill, but the Nikon shot was done with an old Sigma zoom lens, which is not exactly up to the standards of the Art lens I used on the Sigma camera. Here is a pair of photos I shot a couple of days ago, which are from the two cameras with excellent prime lenses (a 50mm f1.4 Art lens on the Sigma and an 85mm f1.4 G on the Nikon).

I used auto-focus to make both photos, becauase the SD1 Merrill generally works better in auto-focus, now that I have a good Art lens on it, just like my Nikon does, when I'm not using the magnified view of live-view to get perfect manual focus.

What do you think?

I think I like the Nikon shot much better. Despite using a worse lens, it is noticeably sharper (read the drinks menu). I also find it less noisy.

Now, maybe you think the first image was underexposed,

Why would I think that? It has the same exposure as the Nikon shot, unless the light changed significantly between the shots. It is too dark, though.

so here's one that isn't:

I think it is an improvement on the first SD1 shot.
