The Canon 400 f5.6 is a great lens. I used it for sports, and birds.

I would choose it over the sigma and tamron 100-400 (I have owned both) mainly due to autofocus performance. Those zooms are all pretty sharp but the AF is a bit iffy on the non canon lenses. Check the sharpness here:

I now use a 100-400 canon mark II instead of the canon 400, but I preferred the prime in many ways. It's lighter and sleeker than the 100-400 II
