I've never seen an integrated octo that isn't an awful compromise.   Not one I want in an actual emergency.   Hard to breathe and hard to manage the BC.  A longer hose would at least get the victim out of your immediate space, however.

Is my idea of using a double-braided flex hose worth doing (regular length)? Or another blind alley like the swivel joint?

the braided style adds friction, which I'd say is undesirable.
