I recently had to scan a few hundreds of tiny B&W photos of my parents, was able to fit 9-12 of them in one scan but had the same problem of splitting them automatically.

Since I don't use Photoshop (on Ubuntu), I found a plugin/script for GIMP that does similarly, worked well consistently for me.
