Re: RF 400, or EF 400 with adapter?

What body do you shoot with, and do you really find yourself using the control ring a lot on your other lenses?

I find that with the R5's three dials, I can easily shoot in full manual without ever relying on the control ring, which is good for muscle memory because those dials on the body are in the same place no matter which lens I use (and whether or not it has a control ring).

If money is no object and you do not have any Canon DSLRs, it would make sense to go with the new RF lens as it has all of the same optical qualities but will be more future-proof and compatible with future bodies. There is some talk about big whites focusing better on the bodies with the 1DX battery because it may be able to drive the motors faster. The R3 may be able to do this even if the R5 can't (then again, maybe it can).

Presumably the extra contacts were added by Canon for a concrete reason. Just because they don't share the reason with us does not mean that you won't notice the benefits when using and EF and RF lens on the same body side by side.

Renting both would be the concrete way to tell, but if you are leaning towards the RF anyway, you might want to save yourself the expense and trouble of the rental. I think we can all agree that the RF will either perform the same or better than the EF.
