Still fairly new to the Canon world, so I'm hoping someone can help me with this:

I am contemplating getting a 400mm f/2.8 lens for my R5. From what I can see, it appears to make more sense to get the latest version of the EF lens and put it on the body via a control ring adapter since the RF lens has no control ring. I like the added flexibility the control ring gives me, even if its placement is quite inconvenient.

Availability put aside, is there ANY disadvantage to this that I need to be aware of and that would speak for getting the RF lens instead?

EF to RF adapters work perfectly. However, the RF has extra pins. You may want to call Canon Tech Support or CPS to ask what these extra pins are for. That should help point you in the right direction... rather than just guessing. These could be for added AF speed or other functional purpose on upcoming bodies. I don't think anyone here really knows. Call Canon

In fact Rudy from Canon suggested that they do exactly those sorts of things on the day that RF mount was officially announced.  Now, how much of that is implemented in these particular lenses is anybody’s guess and I don’t think Canon is going to be too specific about it.  What I am pretty confident about is that Canon does want us to buy new products instead of used discontinued models and they will continue to find ways to make the new more attractive than the old.  I’m sure that the EF lens will last for years of good service but if I was buying new my money’s with RF.
