Interesting comments for me as a former TG6 owner. I couldn't get past the lack of an EVF and as I'm not interested in RAW I switched to the Panasonic version TS7 which for me has the advantage of a simple unified menu with my main cameras. It's bigger and the lens is located exactly where I look to put my forefinger so I am relearning how not get big pink blobs in my pictures. I don't think the JPGs are an improvement on the TG6 so I have no idea how this will work out. Wishing rugged and IQ were not so far apart.
I sure would have gotten a Panasonic if one had offered the same macro capabiity, as I am pretty much a Panasonic habitué and think Panasonic has great menus. s
Don't assume that you HAVE to shoot RAW to get decent pictures with the TG-6; I was just trying things out, and this was one shot that I had taken in RAW only. Others I've taken RAW+JPG, and the JPGs straight out of the camera didn't leave anything to be desired.
Also my main gripe is the lack of a viewfinder, although I understand that an EVF doesn't make much sense for this type of underwater camera. I have now ordered a ClearViewer from clearviewer.com; that had helped tremendously in the past with a Panasonic LX3 which also lacked a viewfinder.
I don't require perfect image quality; my main use for this camera is to record biodiversity in my area. Hence the need for ruggedness and macro. There is a learning curve for everything, and I am determined to make the TG-6 project work now. Would I buy this camera again? Perhaps. Fact is, I already detest it much less now than two weeks ago. I am sure when I will actually be able to SEE what's on the screen, this camera will see much more use.
