BTW, just a quick reminder, when you are checking focus, make sure to ensure consistent lighting conditions. Different light sources (daylight, vs fluorescent, vs Tungston...etc) do have effects on phase-detect autofocus. Of course, always mount your camera on a tripod or rail and use a remote or timer to trigger the shutter.

Yes, absolutely. The blackbird photograph was taken using two Nik SB25 flashguns and the popup flash with little 'natural' light precisely because I wanted to be in complete control of the light.

I have done the same kind of test in daylight but found it necessary to have both a different bird and different batteries:

Nik 16-85 on D300 (I think!). Probably some SB400 fill-flash.

taxidermists as well as photographers?
