With a typical digital camera color filters don't even offer convenience..They are useless on a camera with a color sensor just like they were with color film. Unless, of course,  you are wanting some odd effects in your photo.

If you happen to have a camera with a monochrome sensor, then color filters will work more-or-less then same way as they do with black and white film  In this case, they are the only way to selectively shift tonality.  Sliders in postprocessing won't work because there is no color data present in this case.
