Matt,

The biggest difference between the two is focus accuracy.  DSLR's can have some focus errors.  Larger and more expensive models have provision for calibrating the AF to improve focus accuracy; but not the SL3.  But errors can still occur in this rather complex subject.  The M50, being a mirrorless camera, has no need for the calibration and it's AF is inherently more accurate.  This is quite noticeable on wild life subjects.

The M50 has it's own range of lenses that fit the EF-M lens mount.  However, Canon and several other brands offer an EF-M to EF/EF-S mount adapter so you can use EF and EF-S lenses.  I have the Canon adapter, and so far, 2 of my 3 lenses are EF-S and work perfectly on my M5.  The third lens is the Canon EF-M 22 f/2 that I bought with the used M5.

My experience with cameras and photography goes way, way back in time.  However, my experience with a Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera (my M5) is only one month.  So far, I am delighted with the results from my M5.
