So I am going to Yellowstone later this year and part of the trip will obviously involve photographing Wildlife. Since I've mainly done landscapes, I'm looking for input on what type of telephoto I should bring with me for wildlife.

I already own a 70-200 and likely will rent/buy the 1.4x TC to go with it (so effective FL would be from 98-280mm with the TC).

I'm torn between renting a Tamron 100-400 (or if the Z 100-400 is out by then) and the Tamron 150-600. Part of me wants to rent the 150-600 just so I can be ready for whatever I may encounter, but there's also a decent size/weight difference between the 100-400 and 150-600.

Thoughts on which one I should rent / buy? Or do you think the 70-200 with a 1.4x or even 2x TC would be sufficient?

(Based on a short family trip I took years ago -- which wasn't focused around photography or wildlife) I did get some decent shots with a 70-300 on a DX camera body, although nothing I would call "good" by my current standards. They were basically snapshots but this was before I got serious about photography. With that combo I was able to get a fairly tight shot of a bison on the other side of one of the hotsprings, but I'm wondering about capturing pictures of other animals, like bears, which need to be done from a longer distance...)

I feel like a 70-200mm with a 1.4 tc isn't long enough. You mentioned DX camera which makes me think Nikon. If you are in the Nikon world then there is the wonderful 200-500mm. If that is an option then there is no question. It is better than any of the 150-600mm lenses.
