The problem was the choice of a f/4 lens that provides only half as much light to the autofocus sensors as a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. Not using a speedlight with IR autofocus assist or the Nikon SC-29 sync cord with its IR beam is the other half of the problem.

A D5 is better when subject to camera distance is rapidly changing but it too needs light to autofocus.
