FYI This actually isn’t likely to be a substantial concern for most organizations that use tape in any meaningful way. The LTO tape format that’s used by pretty much everyone in that boat is intended to be archival quality. It’s spec’d to last 15-30 years depending on the generation of the tech you’re talking about. IMO, the practical concerns of the time and infrastructure required to restore from tape are much more likely to be limiting factors before the longevity of the tapes themselves comes into play.

Good to know, thanks. 15-30 years is long enough for the longer US statute of limitations, which is 10 years for bank and wire fraud.

Certainly I have never had a tape > 10 years old where all the data was recoverable. But I abandoned tape backups before LTO.
