Re: Backups not a Panacea

If the malware has already got going before anything else and has complete control of the system, nothing's going to save us, is it?

Good point.

(Except, of course, off-line backups from before the infection.)

In the Solarwinds (supply chain) attack, we are told that the penetration occurred months earlier. If they were doing backups, that means their backups were contaminated. Some organizations retain full backups only for a month. If Solarwinds was retaining only a month or two, then they had no "off-line backups from before the infection."

In a modern datacenter with Big Data, it's difficult to keep full backups for multiple years. Tape drives can hold large amounts of data, but the magnetic particles do not stay aligned forever. Optical drives have better longevity but cannot store much data. Home users are lucky because large HDDs are a perfect solution.

But for protecting against 'ordinary' ransomware, etc., I think there's a role for CFA for at least some of us as one component of our PC security precautions.

At first I didn't understand why CFA is needed in addition to a good file permissions model. CFA is valuable mostly for making users aware of permissions requested by newly installed applications. The model seems to work well on Android phones (not just for folders).
