If everything goes according to plan, I'll watch the great migration later this year when visiting the Serengeti. I own a Z6 and a 24-200mm lens. I've been on a nature walk in Uganda recently - and while the 24-200mm is a great compromise, it's obviously too short for the Serengeti. So I'm looking for alternatives.

I have found the following so far:

  • Tamron 100-400mm, 1.1kg, roughly 600 EUR (plus FTZ, 0.135g, 260 EUR)
  • Sigma 100-400mm f5-6,3, 1.16kg, 780EUR (also plus FTZ, 0.135g, 260 EUR)
  • Nikon Z 70-200mm, 1.14kg, 2100EUR plus Nikon TC-2.0 Z, 0.270kg, 600 EUR
  • Nikon Z 100-400mm, ??kg, 2000 EUR??
  • Nikon AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6, 0.68kg, 550 EUR (plus FTZ, 0.135g, 260 EUR)

The catch would be that I'm quite limited regarding the weight. My travel agent informed me that I'm allowed 15kg on board the Cessna Caravan. While I would hope that it's not too crowded given the pandemic situation we're in, that's what I have to work with. The issue is that I'll also have to pack for a hike up the Kilimanjaro and for some diving on Zanzibar.

So the less weight the better. I probably will make use of the lens only once or twice each year. I thought about renting - but over the medium term, that's too expensive and I prefer to break my own stuff.

Would you see an additional alternative? I'd probably go for a used Tamron given that it's the cheapest and the quality is fairly similar to the Sigma. The Nikon glass is simply too expensive. The AF-P lens is probably too short.

Seriously, for the profile you note I would rent. But I’d go for the 500mm PF. For lightness (plane) and carrying.

I agree that a 500Pf (or 300PF with TC-14E III) would be ideal in many ways, but here (Switzerland) the rental of the 300m PF is around 32 Euros a day, which perhaps indicates a 50 euro a day cost for the 500mm PF? which is quite a lot over 3 weeks. A Tamron SP 150-600mm costs 36 Euros a day to rent, and over 3 weeks would cost 750 Euros, when it only costs 950 Euros to buy...
