They don't have to be big. 50/1.8 is replaced with, say, equivalent 90/3.5 and these bulky 50/1.2 might be replaced with much simpler 90/2.4. Earlier, mirror box -- which had to be match sensor size even if lens was small -- made cameras bulky.
One of most best sold cameras today -- Fuji Instax *is* a medium camera has somewhat small lenses. Because there isn't cost-expensive huge silicon chip in there, they can produce small lenses. No, do not say what Fuji Instax example doesn't qualifies... because the only good examples where lenses are big.
