If the AF-S 300 f4D isn't the very first AF-S lens from Nikon, it was one of the first. As such, it has the earliest "Revision 0" of the AF-S technology. So I suspect the 300D offers the slowest focus among AF-S lenses.

Mine is not much faster to focus than my 80-400 screw drive lens. The 300 is optically excellent, and does great shooting land animals, floating birds, and old race cars, but is marginal for birds in flight (I don't get much opportunity to shoot BIF in the Nevada desert). I haven't tried it for shooting sports, although I'd like to.

More modern lenses offer higher speed at a higher cost. Unfortunately, the old car nut mantra, "speed costs money - how fast can you afford to go" also applies to lenses.
