It was suggested that I try reading some composition books to get a better understanding of composition in a photograph. Does anyone have any to recommend?

Mark Silber's book "Secrets to Creating Amazing Photos" is best referred to as a tool kit of compositional elements. The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman makes the best follow-up to Secrets to Creating Amazing Photos in numerous methods. If Secrets to Creating Amazing Photos is the toolbox, the bird's eyesight, after that this book is the down in the weeds, even more, academic descriptions of how to utilize those tools. In the intro, Michael Freeman defines the act of making up an image as "arranging mayhem," and this publication is his description of how to do just that.
