Hope it is not too late about the scrapped enlarger head. It is worth to retrieve it. It contains an engineered lighting system to back illuminate things like negative films, or slides ... or an optical slit. it is pretty hard to make up such a system, if you suddenly have the need for one.

Here, is was handy to still have such a system waiting for new adventures.
