Björn,

After much research, the best I could determine is that certain XQD card readers simply do not support connection to Macs with Apple Silicon (M1). In a nutshell, Apple tech support considers this to be a problem left to the various peripheral manufacturers. It is possible that a future firmware update by reader manufacturers will solve the problem, but no one seems to have a timeline.

FWIW, I simply sold my incompatible reader and bought a replacement that works.
