You might also check out the Digital Video Talk forum. The "What should I get to ....?" questions can take some time to flesh out.  It can be hard just to get to asking the right questions, it seems sometimes.  But I'd think that a camera/lens set up that would handle train video well, should do reasonably well for stills.  Said from a position of innocence (ignorance for the most part) when it comes to video.

I came across this a while back. What's interesting is it speaks very little to the gear side of things. From a place that would sell anything you might want for photography (I'd expect).:

I've also been following this photographer, having come across some of his work a while back for narrow gauge in Colorado and certainly find his work inspiring.
