I think it is very accurate and better than a physical distance scale. I use it to determine the distance of a bird on a branch. Just put it on manual focus, turn the focus ring and you get a digital number on the lcd or evf.

unfortunately most of my landscape images that were shot with my 16-35 never report accurate distance information.  I manually focus most of my critical images and focus with focus peaking and DMF and it never reports anything close to accurate information.  I have tried to use the scale and set the focus at infinity and it isn't even close.
