Vivitar Zoom Thyristor 250

Hello,

I'm new to using flashes, and I borrowed my dad's old Vivitar 250. I have a couple of questions and concerns. I recently came across posts from 2005 on here about hot shoe voltage issues. Is it safe for me to use this flash on my EOS R? I have been doing so occasionally for the last 6 months. The flash runs on 2 AA batteries.
My next question is how would I go about using it in manual mode with my camera? Or am I better off just buying a gently used "new" canon speedlight or something like a Godox strobe? I have used studio strobes with a remote trigger, but don't own any and want something for run and gun portraits. I'm not looking to do any wedding shoots right now but want to explore using lights in my photography.

Thanks,

Theron
