Re: 80mm f/4 enlarger lens - a compromise

gives a good ranking of lenses for different magnifications. Variety of lens types as well, which also tells us that price is not always corresponding with quality. Another good source is https://www.closeuphotography.com/  Salvaged scanner lenses can deliver too.

I agree that 80mm is too long for this task. At 1:1 the rough total length will be 320mm which is a length that requires a rigid construction if vibration is considered.  In this case the situation is different to normal macro/micro photography as the light source is behind the original so short focal length lenses can be used. At 1: 1 a 40 or 50mm lens delivers a way shorter total length. Light fall off to the edges at 1:1 is also less an issue then. DOF improves too with shorter focal lengths at the same aperture, slides are not that plane in my experience.

I actually plan to use the APS crop so 1.5:1 on my FF camera for the long run as the Sigma EX DG 50mm 2.8 AF acts better than on 1:1 and the files are smaller but sufficient (18MP). If there are some image jewels I will wet mount them on a glass holder and do a manual focus FF shot.

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst
