Yes, at least in older Epsons

I have an Epson XP-760 A4 printer which I've been quite happy with and wish to upgrade to the A3 version, the XP-970.

As they both use the same type of cartridges does anyone know if it is possible to simply change them from the old printer to the new on setup ? If so will "real" ink levels show or is there any risk involved in running dry?

I think that you should try it, and that it will probably work. I've successfully moved Epson 77 and 78 cartridges between older Epson printers. The ink level seemed to report correctly in the second printer. I'm not aware of any reason that this wouldn't work between two Epson printers using Epson 277 cartridges--but then Epson has locked down some ink functions more in some newer printers, so I can't say for sure.
