Shooting for crop, particularly Instagram

Hi guys,

I hope all is well.
I wanted to ask how you guys usually go about shooting for crop and your thought process behind it.

I usually struggle with this in terms of determining how much negative space to include/how far I have to step back for 4x5/16x9 crops and find that it limits the composition I want when taking my photos to ensure I include all the elements I want in my final image (for example, intended close ups/full body shots for portraits where I don’t want to cut off their feet).

I have clients that usually post their images on Instagram in either 4x5 (for their feed), and 16x9 (for IG stories).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
