Keith you're missing the point, making a 7x zoom lens that starts
at 28mm is way harder than making the 3x zooms on these small
cameras that start around 35mm

Minolta's own F300 also outresolves the D7i, so whose engineers are
better, Konica's or Minoltas?

Jawed is correct. If your only criteria is "sharpness" and focus, then a pinhole camera will beat them all, if you want to go to the extreme. A smaller lens with less zoom range is going to be sharper and have larger depth of field than a larger faster lens with more zoom range. A non-zoom lens will usually outperform any zoom design too; that is why people use "prime" lenses on their D/SLR cameras. Until they invent lenses that can change their shape, any zoom design is going to be a compromise between field flatness, focus, and color correction. You can't have it all, and you can't compare a design with a small zoom range to a design with a large zoom range.
