Documentaries and books about the lives of photographers

In advance I apologize for my list being so USA-centric and I’d love to see your recommendations

I can think of a few excellent ones.

  1. “Jay Myself” by Stephen Wilkes about his mentor (and mine among many others) Jay Maisel.
  2. “Which Way is the Front Line from Here: The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington”.
  3. “Get The Picture” , a documentary portrait of the legendary photo editor, the late John G. Morris
  4. “War Photographer”, a 2001 documentary about James Nachtwey
  5. “Garry Winogrand: All Things are Photographable” (street photography at its best and most acerbically romantic.
  6. “Bill Cunningham: New York”

In book form I like

  1. “Avedon: Something Personal” a collective memoir part written and part curated by Avedon’s business manager, Naomi Steven’s
  2. “Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs” by Sally Mann
  3. “Ansel Adam’s: A Biography” and “Group f/64” by Mary Street Alinder
  4. “Light, Gesture, and Color” and “It’s Not About the F-Stop” by Jay Maisel
  5. “The Road to Seeing” by Dan Winters
