Will Canon's entry into mirrorless APS-C drive Sony to improve it's offerings?

The rumor is that Canon will be coming out with several APS-C R-mount cameras:

Will this finally push Sony to put out better offerings for APS-C rather than recycling the same body-design and sensor over and over again? I want to buy into the Sony system, but just can't bring myself to buy any of Sony's APS-C bodies given how far behind they are in terms of ergonomic, fps, EVF, etc.
