Reporting back on my calibration efforts

Having spent half my weekend so far staring at the back of my SpyderX, I can now report:

1. I've settled for the Monitor calibrated for 120cd/m^2 and 5500K (D65 led to far too bluish on screen whites compared to the print)

2. Normal applications (like firefox) are now showing a fetching salmon pink tint

3. Lightoom generated prints can be made a close-ish match to the develop model screen image with soft proofing enabled, as long as I make the following edit adjustments:

- tint -10

- temp -8

- contrast -58

- blacks -55

4. If I switch to Ubuntu darktable, the prints seem to print about a stop lighter and more greenish. The printing forum has not yet been able to offer suggestions on darktable.

My view at this point is that calibration efforts to date have not been a great success. I'm still much better off printing test prints and iterating edits until I get the print I'm happy with.

And I'm more convinced than ever that the colour management support offered by operating systems and photo applications is simply too messy and complex to expect your average computer user (or professional front line support team) to be able to deal with. It is clearly not been a priority to make a simple, straightforward colour management interface and tuning environment. It's really best left to specialists, IMO.

I've given it far more of a serious crack than the majority of people would be prepared to do with only a partial utility. I need to leave this alone and let the frustrations settle and reflect a bit, because at the moment, I'm tempted to switch everything back to sRGB defaults.
