I feel like this might have been the case with mine.   I had a 28-70 that I might have used once a year from 2004-2016.  It failed to move that last year.   I bought a 24-120/4 as backup, got the 28-70 fixed.  Like the 24-120 enough that I sold the 28-70 when it came back to me.
