To address the backup question:

Pictures of which I have v. large amounts are on a huge separate drive split into four, starting with my oldest images, scanned from film exposed from the late 1950s on. Everything is backed up continuously to the cloud with Carbonite. I also back up writing and pictures every few days using SyncToy to a double set of big external usb drives here in this house. For me to get back all my pictures from Carbonite would take several days if not weeks, so I pay them extra to send me actual disks if that should be needed. By the same token, if you start out now with Carbonite and a lot of stuff, backing up the whole lot will take many days.
