Getting the best from eye tracking AF - R6

I’ve been playing around with the eye tracking AF on my R6 with 75-300mm EF iii lens. I’m a bit underwhelmed tbh. If I select eye tracking and “animals”, AIServo I tend to get a bunch of blue focus point boxes dancing around the screen, but rarely finding the subject’s eye. My hit rate is low. Here’s an example from the morning (straight out of camera) - this was in focus, but many weren’t and it doesn’t feel like a tricky shot for AF. Camera was hunting around the tree bark and foreground shrubbery most of the time.

Here’s another one - again in focus, but overall the camera really struggled to focus on the deer - big patch of blue AF points constantly in the wrong area of the frame. Felt like I’d be better just select single point and moving the AF point to suit.

Is this normal? Appreciate it’s not the best of lenses but I’ve not got anything else tele to compare it to.
