11x17 is US Tabloid and not A3. US Letter is 8.5x11 which is not A4.


I'm not testing anyone's English. "The latter" means "the last named" of two, just as "the former" means "the first named" of two.

Letter-sized paper is a N. American phenomenon. A4, used by most of the world, is nearer to the Golden Mean, slightly narrower and longer. But printers are usually on this continent set up with the former as the default. Mats are often nowadays cut with an opening 8 x 10.5 called "digital" to accommodate that. I've been printing and matting a lot of 3:4 images lately, and find this situation not inconvenient for my purposes. If I print them 8.25 x 11 not too much is lost behind the mat.
