I don't think you are going to achieve what you want to do with a shoe mounted flashgun, it is easy to do in macro where the subject is very close but at a distance with a large subject then things get much more difficult.

I think you would need a high power strobe possibly with a snoot attached in order to overcome the bright daylight and maximize the light on your subject, even then you would have to choose your location carefully so that anything in the background is as far away as possible from the subject.
