Agree with you on the lack of advertising and firmware support - in fact, updated firmware is one form of advertising as it garners press attention in places like DPR.

It was sad to see Sony a-mount bodies disappear from Costco in North America, right as a generation of suburbanites were ready to fork out for DSLR kits that included an 18-55 lens for birthday parties and a 70-300 for soccer games. They bought the Nikon kits in droves, especially every December. To get the Sonys one had to go to a camera store, online or an obscure display at BestBuy. The lack of retail presence was just bad business sense in this market; I can't speak to how well they did elsewhere.

You could argue that brick-and-mortar electronic sales was already dying by then, but I know many people who impulse-bought those Nikon D700 kits and more entry-level Canon Rebel kits at Costco. They weren't doing it out of brand loyalty at that point, but rather an implicit trust that Costco carried good gear, and this is what the neighbor kid's parents used at the game...
