In addition to the 7D MkII, I have a GP-E2 hot shoe mounted GPS module which also includes a magnetic compass. This works well with my 5Ds, and the GP-E2 seems to acquire satellites much faster than my 7D MkII. However, I've suffered problems in compass bearing accuracy when I've been in areas such as old iron-stone quarries. (Not surprising, but not all of them are labelled...)

Very recent experience with a Silva compass has now got me thinking that my problems with magnetic bearing rocks was nothing to do with what was in the rocks, but much closer to my camera's eyepiece - my ferrous metal framed spectacles!  Wearing the spectacles and taking a photo, we get no hint that the magnetic bearing may be changing as we put the camera up to our face, but doing the same thing with a compass, and the rotation of the card in the Silva is very obvious...  Checking my records, I find that I moved from titanium spectacle frames to steel frames just before I started noticing the anomalies.

(Gives me an excuse to visit some pleasant places in the UK, now that lock-down is being scaled down...)
